Planting Flower Bulbs In Fall

Flowers that grow from bulbs are prized for their beauty and often fragrant flowers.   Blooms from bulbs usually make their show in the early spring and sometimes on into the summer, however some may make their appearance as early as late winter, peeking their way through snow covered ground.

What I’d like to share in this post is how we can easily create spots of color and interest in our own gardens in springtime by planting flower bulbs in the weeks ahead as the weather gets cooler into fall.

Planting and Harvesting Vegetables in Fall and Winter

Spring and summer are not the only seasons where vegetables can be planted and harvested. There are many varieties of cold-tolerant vegetables that can be planted during the fall to be harvested before winter’s first frost hits, or in some cases, next spring.

The Garden Border

For all you Gardeners out there, if you really want to bump up the appeal and dramatically improve your landscape, plant garden borders to accent your walkways, fences, lawns or paths. Garden borders can be a grounding element in the design that is relevant to the plants and grasses currently present in your yard. Not only are they pretty to look at, they anchor certain visual patterns and serve as a means for echoing color in the varieties of plants that are the highlights of your landscape.

The proper border should draw the eye across smaller plantings, gradually leading it across rhythmic patterns to taller grasses or plants; creating flow and visual interest.  An effective border can turn a merely lovely garden into one that is truly stunning.

Below are some examples of different type of borders that you can incorporate into your own garden.

Creative Container Gardens

From apartment balconies, redwood decks to the estate entryway, the container garden will not only accent your landscape but add a bit of personality to your garden or patio.  Just about every type of plant from herbs, vegetables, flowers and even trees with the proper exposure and care can thrive in the right container.  There are a few things to remember when planning your potted or container garden.  For starters, make sure that your container has the proper drainage, a hole in the bottom will let excess water flow freely through the soil and out of the container preventing roots from rotting from too much moisture. Remember that plants grow so when choosing the size of your container, consider what and how many plants will be going into the container.

Fabulous Fall Gardens

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a beautiful flower garden.  When people think of flowers they typically think spring for the season for blooms.  Well, nothing could be further from the truth and surprisingly the choices are endless.  There’s nothing more appropriate and appealing than rich autumn colors and blooms that evoke warmth and a welcome to the changing of the season.  Below are just a few fall favorites that you can incorporate into your own fall garden.
